Kumasi Marks Ghana @60, In A Dynamic Way

On March 6, 2017, Ghana celebrated her 60th anniversary of independence across the country. The garden city of Kumasi was not left out of the occassion.

In Kumasi, the regional celebration started at the Kumasi Jubilee Park.

The Linguist of the Otumfou; Bafour Kwame, poured libation asking the gods permission to initiate the celebrations. Most Reverend Denial Nkasahfo then sought the blood of Jesus to bless the event while deputy Ashanti regional Imam; Sheikh Zakaria said the Islamic prayer.

The newly sworn in regional minister Hon Simon Osei-Mensah PRO of the military service, Ashanti regional police commander, Hon K. Mensah Bonsu, Majority leader in parliament who is also the member of parliament for Suame constituency were among the many guests present at the occasion.

Sheikh Ahmad Rufai Alao III and his entourage represent the Zango community at the ceremony.

The excellent Parade by the Ghana army; police; fire service, Ghana Emigration, various cadets and school children and members of the Ghana Union of drivers left all impressed as they took turns to march past the crowds and dignitaries present at the occasion.

Then, the female porters locally referred to as the 'kayaayee' set the parage grounds ablaze as they storm out surprisingly to pay homage to Ghana on her independence day commemoration. As if the surprise appearance of the Kayayee was not enough, a man dressed in the Ghana national team jersey appeared on the grounds to delight and put smiles on the faces of all present.

The Kumasi Cultural troop displayed the rich culture of the Asante; mentee from Yachia Junior High school put on a wonderful poetry recital and Bin Abbas performance of Ghana @ 60 spoken word left people yearning for more.

Hon Simon Osei-Mensah; the Ashanti regional minister, said during his address of the ceremony; that: "Being Independent means you have the freedom and ability to make informed decisions without asking anyone for help, the time has come for our generation of Ghanaians to mobilise our resources to push for the accelerated development of our country" he said.

The whole event came to an end with three hearty cheers and presentation of awards to the following:

Dudiakun Special School -- special award for the day. State Experimental School -- best performing public Junior High School. Kensington KHA -- best performing private school. Best performing Senior High - Kumasi Wesley Girls. Best performing youth group - Adventist Youth Group. Best performing Cadet -- Kumasi Technical Institute cadet.

Mr. Yaw Koachi Marfo was awarded the Special Award for the services he rendered to Ghana and the Kumasi metropolis as a whole.
